Top 10: The Best Fuel Economy 1-5
The Top Five Most Fuel Efficient Luxury Cars
In the United States, excellent fuel efficiency and low consumption fuel economy cars are quickly becoming the most popular in the country. However, in Europe and Japan, fuel efficiency has been a primary concern for automotive consumers for decades. The Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, conducts the research and testing each year as new cars are introduced, and provides fuel economy data to American consumers. In addition to being displayed by model years, the information pertaining to fuel efficiency and fuel economy car data is often categorized by vehicle manufacturer and the size and type of car- such as mid-size, luxury, and compact cars. It is also very common to find the data pertaining to fuel economy cars identified by the type of fuel they need in order to operate, such as those that require regular gasoline or premium gasoline, as well as cars that are powered by hybrid technology or alternative fuel. According to the EPA, for the 2008 model year, the top five most fuel efficient luxury cars are the Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec, the Audi TT 2.0T, the Audi A3 2.0T, the Lexus GS 450h, and the Audi A4 2.0T.
Compact Cars Offer Most MPG’s, Lack Comfort
It is clear that in terms of saving money on fuel, European fuel economy cars are leading the industry in fuel efficiency. This is in part due to the fact that gas prices in Europe are even higher than those in the United States because of the high taxes imposed on gasoline purchases. Although economy compact cars would be at the top of the list of all cars manufactured and deliver the best fuel economy, many people still yearn for the size, power, and luxurious features found in larger sedans and luxury coupes that combine outstanding performance, comfort, and fuel efficiency.
The Most Fuel Efficient Luxury Car
At the top of most fuel efficient luxury car lists is the Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec. This particular leader in fuel economy cars is a mid-size luxury sedan that is powered by diesel fuel, and features a long list of standard safety and luxury features, as well as a visually appealing style and excellent driving dynamics. The E320 Bluetec debuted for the 2007 model year, and EPA estimates for the 2008 model are 23 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. In comparison to the other models in the Mercedes-Benz E Class of mid-size luxury vehicles that are powered by regular gasoline, the 3.0 liter turbo diesel E320 Bluetec gets about 7 miles more per gallon in the city and about 8 more miles per gallon on the highway and produces 210 horsepower. The E320 Bluetec is available for purchase in most states; however, in those states that have adopted California’s strict emissions standards, the E320 Bluetec is only made available to new owners on a two-year lease basis.
Luxury Meets Excellent Fuel Economy-Cars By Audi
The German luxury auto manufacturer, Audi, manufactures three of the top five luxury sedans based on EPA testing, the Audi TT 2.0T, the Audi A3 2.0T, and the Audi A4 2.0T. The TT 2.0T is available as a coupe or roadster, and power is provided by a gasoline-powered engine, although the recommended fuel is
premium grade gasoline in order to receive the highest performance. The 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine delivers 23 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. The A3 2.0T is a front wheel drive car that comes in a convenient five-door hatchback style and is equipped with a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine. EPA estimates this version of Audi’s highly rated European fuel economy cars at 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. It produces 200 horsepower, and features a sequential shift transmission that offers the fuel economy of a manual gearbox with the ease of automatic transmission operation. The Audi A4 2.0T also features a 200 horsepower 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engine that runs on gasoline and is available as a four door sedan or two door coupe. On average, the A4 2.0T is capable of 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.
Lexus Hybrid Combines Luxury And Fuel Efficiency
The only Lexus to make the top five fuel economy cars list in the luxury car category is the Lexus GS 450h. This mid-size luxury sedan features a hybrid power train that combines a high output electric motor and a powerful 3.5 liter V6 engine that is capable of producing 340 horsepower. EPA estimates for the GS 450h are a very respectable 22 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.
Save Money No Matter What You Drive
Whatever car you choose, the way you drive will also affect the fuel efficiency of your vehicle. To get the best fuel economy, cars should not be driven at excessive speeds. Depressing the accelerator lightly will save more fuel than if you stomp down on the gas pedal. Removing unnecessary items from the trunk and the back seat of the car will also reduce the weight of the vehicle and therefore the amount of power and fuel required to transport you, your passengers, and your belongings.
