Top 10: The Best Fuel Economy
The Auto Manufacturers Who Offer You More MPG
It seems there is no escaping the rising cost of gasoline. Thankfully, most car manufacturers are responding by producing fuel efficient vehicles that include alternative fuel economy cars and hybrid vehicles that combine electric motors with traditional gasoline engines to reduce fuel consumption and increase the average miles per gallon achieved in both the city and on the highway. Japanese and European alternative fuel economy cars, as well as customary gasoline fuel economy cars, have been determined by the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, in the United States to be amongst the most fuel efficient vehicles for the 2008 model year. The last 5 spots on the 2008 list of the most fuel efficient vehicles, as determined by the EPA, belong to Toyota and Honda, with just one spot occupied by Ford.
Two Highly Fuel Efficient Cars From Toyota
The Toyota Yaris occupies both the sixth and seventh spots on the EPA’s list of the ten most fuel efficient cars for the 2008 model year. The Yaris can be purchased in a three-door hatchback body style or as a four-door sedan, and features a 1.5 liter 4 cylinder gasoline powered engine that provides adequate acceleration and excellent gas mileage - regardless of whether you choose the sedan or the hatchback. The EPA average fuel economy car ratings for the Yaris are exceptional at 29 miles per gallon in the city and 36 miles per gallon on the highway when equipped with the standard five-speed manual transmission. Those who prefer an automatic transmission will also benefit from the Yaris’ gas sipping nature without much sacrifice at the pumps, with EPA estimates of the same 29 miles per gallon in the city achieved with the manual transmission and a very close 35 miles per gallon on highway travels.
Ford Offers Hybrid AWD SUV Fuel Efficiency Leader
The all wheel drive Ford Escape Hybrid would not easily be recognized or typically be considered as a fuel economy car due to its 5-door SUV body style and size. However, EPA estimates of 29 miles per gallon in the city and 27 miles per gallon on the highway have earned the Escape Hybrid the eighth spot on the EPA’s top ten list of the most fuel efficient cars for 2008. In addition to the outstanding gas mileage, the Escape Hybrid is environmentally friendly, helps reduce our country’s dependence on foreign sources for fuel, and offers an economical American manufactured alternative to smaller and less utilitarian European fuel economy cars. The Escape Hybrid is powered by a combined hybrid system that consists of a 2.3 liter 4 cylinder gasoline powered engine that works in conjunction with 2 electric motors, thus reducing the amount of gasoline consumption and emissions that are harmful to the environment.
The Corolla Offers More Options And More Savings
Once again, Toyota shows up as the manufacturer earning the ninth spot on the list of the top ten cars with best fuel economy for the 2008 model year with the gas saving Toyota Corolla. This four door compact sedan is available in a variety of trim levels to satisfy individual preferences and comfort levels. All versions of the Corolla are powered by a 1.8 liter 4 cylinder engine mated to a 5 speed manual transmission. EPA estimates for this highly rated member of this year’s fuel economy cars are 28 miles per gallon in the city and 37 miles per gallon on the highway.
Honda Fits Into EPA’s Most Fuel Efficient
Squeaking into the last spot on the top ten best fuel economy cars according to the Environmental Protection Agency is the 2008 Honda Fit, with EPA fuel consumption estimates of 28 miles per gallon in the city and 34 miles per gallon on the highway. The Honda Fit is a front wheel drive, four door hatchback that is propelled by a 1.5 liter 4 cylinder engine traditional gasoline engine.
Power And Performance Often Sacrificed For Savings
It stands to reason that smaller fuel economy cars with less powerful, more fuel efficient engines will not provide the performance of larger, more refined, and more fuel thirsty models. However, the majority does provide ample power for everyday driving needs. Alternative fuel economy cars and hybrid models typically offer more horsepower and better overall performance, while also providing an extremely fuel efficient mode of transportation within their respective automotive industry categories. However, if the only concern is miles per gallon, compact European fuel economy cars, as well as many Japanese compact cars and some American manufactured fuel economy cars, will usually take you farther for the least amount of money spent on gasoline.
Regular Maintenance Critical To Maximum Fuel Efficiency
No matter what car, truck, or SUV you drive, you can conserve fuel and get more miles to the gallon by being sure to maintain your car properly and regularly. Routine oil changes, keeping the air pressure in all four tires at the optimal level, and reducing the speed at which you travel can all help you achieve more miles to the gallon.
